A helicopter flies over the future site of PNC Park, before the site clearing. I thought originally it was a media helicopter but it is a pretty serious looking helicopter, so maybe it is connected to the demolition somehow. Three Rivers stadium is visible in the background. It would have just under two more years of existence before its own demolition day.
Three Rivers Plaza awaits demolition at the future site of the left field of PNC Park. According to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, the building originally was a paper storage warehouse, but was eventually converted to senior citizens housing. You can tell it still looks like a pretty substantial structure. It was no match for 550 dynamite placements though.
Boom! The explosions go off in Three Rivers Plaza. I must have jumped because the picture is pretty blurry.
Just took a few seconds before the PNC Plaza was no more and a giant cloud of dust rose from the site.
The demolition team clearly did a great job, as none of the surrounding structures appears affected in the least.
Thumbs up from my dad on the Seventh Street Bridge after the successful demolition. Dad has worked on the North Side for many years. He was also looking forward to watching the construction of PNC Park.
The dust clears and you can see what's left of Three Rivers Plaza, which is not much. Suddenly the location looks a lot more like it does today and you can imagine PNC Park rising in the empty space.
View of the future site of PNC Park from the downtown Pittsburgh side of the Allegheny River. The boat house and the bridge appear as they do today.
A much closer view of the rubble after the Three Rivers Plaza demolition. I believe this is a view from Sixth Street. You can see just a little piece of intact building. Also there is a relatively new building visible - if memory serves I think it housed a union - that still has to be demolished before PNC Park can be built.
